How to be safe as a delivery driver

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for delivery drivers but it’s also increased the risk of contracting the virus. Luckily there’s a lot you can do as a delivery driver to keep yourself and your customers safe.

Here are some safety precautions you can take:

  • Wear protective safety gear. If you have access to it, you can wear protective safety gear like a mask or gloves to prevent you from spreading or catching the virus. Ultimately it’s a precautionary measure that benefits both you and your customers.
  • Keep your distance from the customer. When you arrive at your destination, remain a safe distance from your customer. Offer to place the delivery bag on their front step or porch to reduce contact.
  • Clean your hands before and after handling food containers. Keep hand sanitizer in your vehicle and sanitize before and after handling containers.
  • Limit your contact with cash. Most people will use a credit card to purchase food delivery but on the off chance you have to handle cash, be sure to sanitize your hands after you’ve put it away.
  • Be mindful. Ultimately it’s up to you to advocate for your safety. You can direct your interactions with the customer and practice social distancing to minimize any risks that come with food delivery.

How to care for your vehicle

These days, it’s extremely important to keep your vehicle in tip-top shape–especially as a delivery driver. Here are some things you can do to make sure your vehicle is well-maintained, clean and comfortable.

  • Keep up with regular maintenance. If you’re delivering with a vehicle, you’ll want to ensure your routine maintenance like oil changes and tire rotation is kept up-to-date. If your vehicle is working well, it’s one less thing you have to worry about.
  • Wash your car. It may seem silly but it’s an important tip. If you wash your car regularly, you reduce the chance of rust AND you’ll make a good impression when you drive up to make your delivery.
  • Disinfect commonly-used areas. Given the current situation with COVID-19, it’s not a bad idea to disinfect or sanitize the areas in your car that you use the most. Your steering wheel, keys and door handles are used frequently and should be cleaned often.

Popular interview questions for delivery drivers

Some delivery companies only require you apply online and you may not have to do an interview before being added to their roster. However, some companies still interview and if they do, you’ll want to be prepared.

Here are five popular delivery driver questions from Indeed with suggestions on how you can give the best answers.

Q: What would you do if you got stuck in traffic on a tight delivery deadline?

A: Many businesses are on tight deadlines when it comes to deliveries. If you were ever stuck in a situation where you may not deliver on time, you’ll want to reassure your potential employer that you can maintain your composure, consider customer service and address the issue to your boss.

Some things you could say? Tell the interviewer how you would politely let the customer (or your supervisor) know the delivery may be a little late, apologize and explain why. You could mention how you wouldn’t drive recklessly just to get somewhere faster and that you would look for alternate routes to reach your destination.

Q: What is your driving record like?

A: Since driving is the main part of the job, your employer will want to know what type of driver you are. They’ll want to hear you have a clean driving record, are properly licensed and that your car is properly registered. The key to this answer is honesty. If they ask if you’ve had any speeding tickets, be honest. When you answer, tell them about the driving mistake then talk about what you’ve learned and how you plan to avoid the same mistakes in the future.

Q: Why do you want to work for our organization?

A: This question is your opportunity to show the employer you’ve mindfully researched their company and have something to show for it. You should be able to tell them why you’d rather work for their company over another and give reasons to why you’re interested in the position. It’s a chance to make yourself look good and tell the employer how great their company is (it’s a win-win).

Q: How would you handle a delivery where the customer is not available yet you require a signature to complete the delivery?

A: How you answer this question is a good judge of character. Employers don’t want to hire someone who would still deliver a package if they didn’t get a signature. Even if you don’t know the company’s specific policy, express how you’d follow the company procedure and that you can be flexible and think on the spot. Give an example of what you’d do, like leaving a note for the customer on how they can get their delivery.

Q: Can you give me an example of how you’ve used your time-management skills to complete a delivery?

A: This is your opportunity to show the employer how you prioritize your tasks and strategize on the job. When you describe your example, explain what happened, how you budgeted your time and the result of your efforts.
